Lily Beat Leukemia

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Lily's triumph over Leukemia. In March of 2005, a routine checkup for Kindergarten turned into much more than expected. A follow up call from the pediatricians office said there was something wrong with her blood sample, and that they weren't sure, but if she developed a fever she needed to go to the Emergency Room right away. A few hours later, Lily spiked of fever of 103. At the emergency room the doctor ordered more blood work and Lily was admitted. Later that evening they received the results... Lily had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

They used humor to get through it all, each finger poke, port access, blood transfusion, all her blonde hair falling out, and the weight gain due to the steroids. Everything was going as planned on treatment... and then in September her blood work showed issues with her blood cell counts. They knew before the doctors broke the news - Lily relapsed and was producing cancer cells.

When a child relapses on treatment the cure ratio is less than half. They needed a miracle. Her parents were not a donor match so they turned to the National Stem Cell Registry to find a donor; a 19 year old male from Germany would save her life. Lily believed it was worth the risk. She said "I beat cancer once and I will beat it again!"

More chemotherapy, bone marrow aspirations, spinal taps, radiation... During her seizures (due to the methotrexate injected into her spine) the one word she kept trying to say was "Mom." She was at risk for infection and had to be isolated all the time. Any fever meant weeks in the hospital. At one point she was in intensive care with a life support machine just outside her room. While in ICU, the doctors had to fix a kink in her central line but they couldn't use anesthesia, so they just held her hand and told her jokes.

After the stem cell transplant Lily stayed at UNMC for a month to recover. Graft versus host disease took many months to heal. And through it all she kept up on her schoolwork so she wouldn't fall behind, and now she is in high school. Lily has many battle scars, and she still has to return every year for routine testing, but this year is her 10th Anniversary of being cancer free. Each year there still is a small chance for a secondary cancer, but in the words of Lily, she will beat it. Her mother says "Lily is the strongest and bravest person I know. She is my hero. Her faith in herself is what helped her overcome cancer."

Come celebrate Lily's 10th Anniversary with us, while we raise money to beat blood cancer.

Help fight Blood Cancer

The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

As there are no means of preventing or early screening for most blood cancers, the LLS research agenda is focused on finding cures. LLS drives research in areas of unmet medical need, and helps to bridge the gap between academic discovery and drug development. LLS identifies and funds the most promising blood cancer research projects and forges partnerships with academic institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate the development of new therapies.

LLS is the leading source of free, highly specialized blood cancer information, education and support for patients, survivors, families and healthcare professionals. They advocate for blood cancer survivors and their families, helping patients navigate their cancer treatments and ensuring they have access to quality, affordable and coordinated care.
